These flat slabs of virgin cork lean easily against the back of a terrarium, lie flat for orchid mounts, or stack into hides for reptiles and amphibians. The bark is naturally water resistant, mold and rot resistant, and safe for bioactive setups. Every piece is hand picked, so you get real texture and character instead of something stamped out of a mold. Cork bark flats are sold by weight, so you can grab exactly what your build needs.
Flats are cut from the outer bark of the cork oak and left with their natural curve, which makes them the most versatile shape we sell. Most people reach for them when they want to cover a wall — a vivarium background, a tank divider, a false rock face — because a few overlapping pieces read as one continuous surface once they are siliconed in place.
They are also the standard choice for mounting orchids, bromeliads and tillandsias. The bark holds a root system without rotting, takes a screw or a length of fishing line cleanly, and keeps its structure through years of misting.
Pick flats over rounds when you want surface area rather than an enclosed hide. If you are building a background, order more than you think you need and dry-fit the pieces before you glue anything — cork is irregular by nature, and the fit comes from arranging pieces to each other, not from cutting them to size.
Where this cork comes from
Every piece we sell is virgin cork bark, hand harvested from cork oak forests in Portugal and graded at our warehouse in Madison, Florida. Harvesting does not fell the tree — the bark is stripped on a cycle and grows back, which is why cork oak forests are among the few working landscapes that get healthier the longer they are worked.
The bark is heat treated before it ships and contains no chemical additives. It is naturally resistant to mould and rot, which is what makes it usable in humid and bioactive enclosures where most woods break down, and it is safe for reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates, birds and small mammals.
